Certified seed is produced under a controlled process that guarantees three things you cannot see by eye:
- Genetic purity — the seed is true to its variety, so the whole field behaves consistently.
- High germination — a known, tested percentage of seeds will actually sprout.
- Cleanliness — free from weed seeds, other crops and disease.
The hidden cost of cheap seed
Uncertified seed often has lower germination, so you get gaps and thin stands — and thin stands mean lower yield and more room for weeds. It may also carry disease or be mixed with other varieties, giving you an uneven crop that matures at different times and is harder to manage and harvest.
The maths farmers miss
Seed is usually a small fraction of your total cost per acre. Saving a little on seed but losing even 10–15% of your yield is a bad trade every time. Certified seed protects the much larger investment you make in land, water, fertiliser and labour.
