Fall Armyworm in Maize: How to Spot It Before It Spreads

Maize field at risk of fall armyworm infestation

Fall armyworm has become one of the most damaging pests maize growers in Pakistan now face, capable of wiping out a field if it goes unnoticed for even a couple of weeks. If you’ve sown maize this Kharif season — especially anything sown in the August window — here’s what to watch for and how to respond.

Why Fall Armyworm Is a Bigger Threat Than It Used to Be

Fall armyworm is an invasive pest, first confirmed in the region only a few years ago, and it has spread quickly because local maize varieties and farmers alike have limited built-up resistance or experience managing it. It attacks maize plants from roughly the 10–40 day stage, and August-sown crop — already growing under tighter time pressure — tends to see noticeably higher infestation rates than crop sown earlier in the season. If you’re still finalising your sowing date, our guide on the August 15 fodder maize sowing deadline covers why timing itself is one of your best defences.

How to Identify an Infestation

  • Ragged, windowpane-style feeding holes on young leaves, often in a distinctive row pattern as the leaf unfurls.
  • Sawdust-like frass (droppings) visible in the whorl — usually the clearest early sign before major leaf damage is visible.
  • Larvae hiding deep in the whorl during the day; check early morning or late evening when they’re more likely to be feeding on the surface.
  • In heavier infestations, larvae bore directly into the developing ear, which is where the real yield loss happens.

Scouting: Your Best Defence

Regular field walks from the 10-day stage onward catch infestations while they’re still manageable. Once larvae are large and deep in the whorl, control becomes significantly harder — the earlier the catch, the more effective any response will be. Check a spread of plants across the field rather than just the edges, since infestation often starts patchily.

What Helps Reduce Pressure

  • Sow on time. Crop sown by mid-August consistently shows lower infestation than later-sown fields — timing is genuinely one of your strongest tools here.
  • Avoid staggered sowing dates across neighbouring fields where possible; continuous availability of young maize keeps armyworm populations active across a wider window.
  • For chemical control options and application timing suited to your infestation level, we’d recommend consulting your local agricultural extension office or a regional agronomist, since recommended actives and thresholds vary by area and are updated as resistance patterns shift.

Starting the Crop Right Matters

A vigorous, evenly-growing crop generally handles pest pressure better than a stressed one. Starting with certified seed — Lashkar Seeds’ Fodder Corn, Hybrid Corn Silage Special or Double Cross Hybrid Corn — gives your crop a stronger, more uniform stand from the outset, which makes scouting easier and gives the plant more resilience to work with. Not sure which of the three fits your goal? See our corn variety selection guide.
