Stem borer larvae tunnel directly into the rice stem, and the damage shows up differently depending on the crop stage:

• “Dead heart” — during vegetative growth, the central shoot of an affected tiller dries up and dies while surrounding leaves stay green. Gently pulling on the dead shoot, it comes away easily at the base.
