Stem borer and leaf folder are the two pests every paddy grower should be actively watching for right now. Both are active through the humid August growth stage, and both can quietly cut into yield well before the damage is obvious from the field edge.
Stem Borer: What to Watch For
Stem borer larvae tunnel directly into the rice stem, and the damage shows up differently depending on the crop stage:
- “Dead heart” — during vegetative growth, the central shoot of an affected tiller dries up and dies while surrounding leaves stay green. Gently pulling on the dead shoot, it comes away easily at the base.
- “White ear” — if the attack happens after panicle initiation, the entire panicle turns white and produces no grain. This is the more costly stage to lose a tiller at.
- Check tillers in patches across the field, not just the bunds — infestation often starts in scattered pockets rather than uniformly.
Leaf Folder: What to Watch For
- Larvae fold rice leaves lengthwise and feed from inside the fold, leaving characteristic white, papery streaks along the leaf once you unfold it.
- Heavily affected fields show a scorched, whitish appearance from a distance well before individual folded leaves are easy to spot up close.
- Leaf folder rarely kills the plant outright, but repeated defoliation during the grain-filling stage reduces the photosynthetic area the plant has to fill grain — the yield hit shows up at harvest, not in the field.
Why August Matters for Both
Paddy transplanted in June or July is now moving through vegetative growth into panicle initiation across most of the Basmati belt — exactly the stage where stem borer’s “white ear” damage does the most economic harm, and where leaf folder’s photosynthetic loss compounds fastest heading into grain fill. Warm, humid August conditions also favour both pests’ reproduction, so populations can build quickly if scouting lapses. For the full season calendar this stage fits into, see our Basmati cultivation guide.
Scouting Practice That Actually Catches Problems Early
- Walk the field weekly, not just when something looks obviously wrong — dead heart and early leaf folding are easy to miss from a distance.
- Check multiple points across the field rather than only the easily-accessible edges.
- Balanced nitrogen matters here too — overly lush, excessively fertilized growth tends to attract heavier leaf folder pressure.
For spray recommendations and timing suited to your infestation level, your local agriculture extension office or a regional agronomist is the right call — thresholds and recommended actives vary by area and shift as resistance patterns change.
A Strong Start Helps the Crop Handle Pressure
Certified seed like Lashkar’s PK-1121 Basmati gives paddy a more uniform, vigorous stand from transplanting onward, which makes both scouting and the plant’s own resilience to pest pressure noticeably easier to manage through a demanding August.
